Sheet Metal Fabrication
Sheet Metal Fabrication: An Overview
There are multiple sheet metal fabrication processes, which can be distinguished by how hot the metal is when fabrication begins and the actions taken to create a product. For example, there are cold, warm or hot-working processes.
There are several sheet metal fabrication processes that typically fall into three categories. Bending, deep drawing and spinning are processes that fall into the forming category. Shearing and punching are classified as cutting with shear; water jet cutting and laser beam cutting fall into the category of cutting without shear. Sheet metal ranges in thickness between 0.006 and .025 inches.
There are several tools used in sheet metal fabrications: bandsaws to cut the sheet to a desired size, chops saws and cutting torches are also used to cut sheet metal. Fabricators use hydraulic breaks to bend the metal at specific angles; they use rolling machines to create rounded, not sharp, corners.
